2K injection molding (two-component injection molding) is a manufacturing process in which two different plastics or colors are combined into a single component within one fully automated production cycle. This technology makes it possible to combine, for example, rigid and soft materials, integrated seals, or visual design elements—without the need for additional assembly.
The process requires specialized injection molding machines equipped with at least two independent injection units:
- First, the initial material is injected to create the base component.
- The mold cavity is then repositioned, typically by rotating or transferring the part within the mold.
- Finally, the second material is injected into the newly accessible areas, permanently bonding with the first component at the contact surfaces.
We are excited about the innovative projects this new capability will enable and are already putting our new machines to work on customer applications.
